Scalpers and resellers continue to be a serious issue in the gaming industry, especially true when a new console is released or during times of scarcity. Fortunately, the weight of the law has fallen on a group of individuals engaged in these activities.

Resellers of Video Game Consoles Arrested in Japan

According to reports from local news outlets, members of the Hyogo Prefectural Police in Japan arrested 11 individuals under suspicion of creating multiple fake accounts on websites to purchase and resell video game consoles. The arrest took place on January 19th.

Among the suspects are a 17-year-old student and a 19-year-old executive of a company. They are accused of creating fake accounts to register on a retailers website to buy more products than allowed. Reports indicate that the items were delivered to an apartment building in Nagoya, Japan.

The group is said to have purchased 18 consoles, with an approximate value of $4,827 USD, on October 16, 2023. According to investigations, it is estimated that, at least, the suspects bought and resold 2000 units that month for a total of $575,012 USD.

Currently, the police are conducting an investigation to uncover the origin of the funds used to purchase the video game consoles. Its worth noting that the report does not mention the brands or models of the platforms that were resold.

The successor to the Nintendo Switch is believed to debut this year, causing concern among fans. Will resellers take advantage and hoard all available units? Well have to wait to find out, but it seems that the Japanese company will take action to address this issue.
