How toxic fandom and high expectations are ruining the geek experience for many of us

There is so much pressure on the content offered by streaming platforms

We’re living in an era STACKED with geek content online across all streaming platforms. And while this should be a perfect thing for us, it has become entirely self-defeating. The reason? Excessive hateful comments on almost every movie and TV show released in the last years. And what’s even more ironic is the same groups that blister the multimedia content are (most of the time) the same groups that keep making wild theories before the content even comes out.

And it’s very complicated to be kept between the people who consume these kinds of movies and shows. Because all in all, what I want to do is enjoy new story adaptations. It doesn’t matter if they are not that similar to the original comic, book, or whatever. But that’s my way of consuming this media. From what I’ve seen on the internet, the complaints against specific content are proportional to the resentment for not being so ‘accurate.’

I agree that sometimes this content can be genuinely different from the original stories, but that’s why they are called adaptations, right? Most of the time, we won’t get the real deal, and that’s ok. That’s why these productions have an entire team of screenwriters, directors, and filmmakers in charge of recreation. Giving life to another way to tell a story we already know and love. How many adaptations have we watched and enjoyed? And how many of these stories do we know by heart and with all detail? Exactly. Not all of them.

I know. Most of the hate nowadays comes from comic book fans. And my theory for these particular hard feelings is that we live the most powerful moment in superhero movies and the steaks are high. Because there are so many stories told, and now that this ‘genre’ is so popular, it is expected to deliver what the fans want.

And yes, while we always hope that all filmmakers bring decent superhero adaptations, they can’t always make everyone happy. I think most people waiting for the next episode of whatever series comes out shouldn’t just wait for them to have a challenging conversation online. We won’t always be satisfied, but that’s not the point. We should be grateful that there are tons of stuff to watch online. And even though not everything is for every audience, there is something for everyone. Far from jumping to conclusions and hating everything, we must first respect that someone out there is enjoying it.

What are your thoughts on this new wave of hate against geeky content on streaming platforms?
