Fans of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, one of Marvel's best heroes, are sure to be looking forward to the new Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which will be released on June 2, 2023.
If, for some reason, you need another excuse to continue raising your hype for the next film, you will be interested to know that Portal inspired the creators of an element of the film.
In a recent interview with Indie Wire (via IGN), Kemp Powers, co-director of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, revealed that The Spot, the villain of this sequel, is inspired by Portal because of the way he uses portals.
“This villain has so much untapped potential. If you've ever played Portal, you know you can do crazy things with these superpowers," he said.
We don't blame you if you've never heard of The Spot. He is a villain who first appeared in 1985 in Spectacular Spider-Man #98. His actual identity is Doctor Jonathan Ohnn, who becomes a villain after an experiment with portals goes wrong.
As a villain, The Spot can make portals appear on his body and use them as weapons or defensive items. That said, the inspiration in Portal lets us see that these portals will be used in very creative ways.
"Keep in mind that Miles, all along, saved the entire multiverse in the first movie. Now he has to step back, manage life and family, and realize he was never the 'friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. 'but 'the Spider-Man who saves the multiverse.' The journeys of Miles and The Spot complement each other," Powers explained.
