Activision’s active player count dropped for the first time in years

Yeah… not even Call of Duty could help

Bad news for Activision Blizzard, as their active player base, fell below 100 million for the first time since 2019. According to the publisher’s second quarter, 2022 financial results report which ended on June 30.

Seems like the monthly active users (or MAU for short) peaked at 94 million, going significantly down.

Going down?

Apparently, Activision’s revenue and operating income have declined year over year, demonstrating the low engagements its game is having. However, the company is expecting these numbers to rise when their upcoming Call of Duty games release officially.

As you may already know, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is expected for release on October 28, 2022 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 will also launch as an extension of the Modern Warfare universe later this year.

On the other hand, Call of Duty net bookings on console and PC grew sequentially in the second quarter, following gameplay improvements and seasonal content across Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Warzone, however this wasn’t enough to rise Activision's numbers with a net income of $280 million which goes down 68% compared to Q2 2021.

Let’s remember that the pending transaction with Microsoft is still waiting for approval by the Federal Trade Commission and the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority, this could define their performance on the next quarter.
