Battalion 1944 developer says their partnership with Square Enix has come to an end

The console versions have been canceled and will be refunded

Bulkhead Interactive, the developer of the old-school World War II shooter Battalion 1944 from Derby, has announced the ''formal termination'' of its relationship with Square Enix. The publisher acquired a 20 percent stake in Bulkhead in 2018 and announced plans for a new studio project.

The release of a long-awaited update to Battalion arrived today, and the game will receive a "major, final update." The title's name will become Battalion: Legacy on August 16.

The console port of the game that never saw the light is now officially canceled, nearly six years after being financed through Kickstarter. In 2018, the developer assured fans that console versions were still on the way after many began asking for a refund.

''We are deeply disappointed that Battalion 1944 never made it to console, and we will refund all console Kickstarter supporters. Thank you to everyone that backed the console version, and we are sorry it has taken so long to rectify this.'' Bulkhead said on a steam update blog.

The title's upcoming final update, Battalion: Legacy, is a revisited and final version of Battalion 1944 coming on August 16, 2022, and will be free for all users.

''We have taken the best aspects of Battalion 1944 and honed in on these to create a fluid, bug-free experience, featuring a working server browser, an added faction, new weapons, classic Search & Destroy game mode with all weapons available, complete UI rework and visual overhaul. Battalion: Legacy is the culmination of work consolidated into one old school experience for all to enjoy.''
