If you’re one of those who enjoy farming games and are obsessed with Netflix documentaries on serial killers and cult leaders, let me tell you that Cult of the Lamb may be a perfect fit for you.

Cult of the Lamb is one game that gracefully combines cuteness and evil. It is a little farming, a little RPG, and just a few puzzles to make it dynamic and fun for everyone. Well, almost everyone. Keep in mind that this is, in fact, a game about creating a cult. Don’t let the cuteness of the illustrations distract you from the core story. Cult of the Lamb combines the worship features of a cult with different elements of occultism, magic, satanism, and Wiccan practices that aren’t recommended for younglings.

Also, more mature belief systems and religious people could find this game offensive for the topics involved. But if you’re here for fun, then fear not. Fun is what you’ll get.

So, first things first. As we enter Cult of the Lamb for the first time, we come across a very friendly, straightforward menu. The fun begins the very second you hit start, with a combination of cinematic and playable moments to get you started in your character's story, a lamb that will soon die in the hands of a sacrifice.

Welp, you die. But… you are immediately revived by a mysterious spirit that promises to give you your life back if you help it out in exchange. How so? Create a cult and guide followers on its name. Sounds easy, empowering. Why not?

At this point, you’ll realize that the game functions on an RPG-like communication with long and intriguing texts, complemented with answers you can choose from (sometimes.) As I previously mentioned, pretty straightforward.

So, you need to start a cult. For that, you’ll need followers. Alongside a very intuitive tutorial, you get your first one. This action comes with your first responsibility as a cult leader: provide for your fam—food, money, and materials, for starters. And of course, a fire, you’re not that powerful to offer it with magic.

As you gain followers, you will find that their names and appearance can be customized. Keep an eye on their personality traits. They can be tremendous cult material, they can be slow workers, and they can be rebellious.

To provide for your people, you must follow up on some missions (very well indicated and marked in case you forget them.) The task itself will get you through the way of material, money, and food, and as you complete them, you’ll also get enhancements for you and your cult. Weapons are provided when you enter a mission and will level up as you keep achieving them. You can’t keep them, though. So the sanctuary is a weapon-free zone (over time, you’ll thank it was kept that way.)

This will initially keep your followers happy, but only for a while. After that, they’ll grow in number and ambition!

While away on your missions, your cult members will keep the sanctuary (yup, very Manson style) growing. Just beware not to take too long to come back because you may find some of them are already starving (or dead.) Oh yeah, not only must you provide for them; as you begin your first cult, you need to cook for them and also clean their mess. Don’t worry; this will come in handy later.

Also, your followers will need spiritual food to feast on. So, bless them, make them keep their faith alive. Keeping them happy and motivated is critical. For starters, you’ll need to build a temple for them to receive your wisdom and a statue to worship you. Because which cult works without the power of faith? Exactly.

Rituals, tenets, and preaching will be a daily responsibility for you. Feeding spirituality will have many shapes; they are all essential to your cult.

Your cult’s needs will also become more elaborate. Not only will they need food and a shrine to praise you. They will also need a bed to sleep on and rest. So make sure they have a good night’s sleep; if not, they can get cranky y rebel against you!

As you go away on missions, you must also put them in charge of the sanctuary. Harvesting and taking care of some features will be necessary. Make sure they abide and help you out. Some may protest and will likely lose their time making friends with other members.

Beware because some friends can lead to treason! Make sure to talk with all your members and hear what they need (although sometimes they ask for random and not-so-beneficial things for the cult.) Keep a close relationship with them, but make sure this doesn’t mean they’ll turn into bold and defiant followers.

Don’t worry; if you ever feel like someone is being too defiant or rebellious, you can teach them a lesson. But if they still don’t comply, you can always eat them.

As you delve into your journey as a cult leader, you’ll face some foes that were sent to mess with your cult. Luckily, you may save a soul and invite them to your cult after defeating them (it gets easier over time if you learn their moves). To gain significant rewards for your fam, you’ll encounter mini-bosses sent from the one about to sacrifice you at the beginning of the story.

Not every creature you meet is trying to kill you, though. You’ll also stumble upon exciting characters. One of them will give you Tarot cards that level your HP and fighting abilities (among other things)!

Talking about HP. Your health begins as many other games, with three hearts. And as it may feel insufficient, you’ll find out that there won’t be another option, at least after the tutorial has ended. After that, you’ll find some extra temporary hearts and fillers, but let me tell you, they are rare. So tread lightly.

If you run out of hearts, you’ll return to the one who gave you a “second life” to regain your hearts and get you back to the sanctuary. This can happen as often as you need until you complete your missions. Unluckily, with every respawn, you’ll lose a percentage of every item and money (and some particular objects) you collect during buttle. A fair price to pay, if you ask me.

At this point, you’ll find that the game itself is truly intuitive. You won’t feel like you don’t know what to do or where to go, how to defeat a certain level of enemies, how weapons work, and how to keep your cult more or less happy.

From this moment on, it depends on your strategy, how well you organize your time, and your leadership. When it comes to a powerful cult, you’ll have to face powerful situations too!

Cult of the Lamb may seem not so challenging, but there’s a difficulty level selection in case you find it too easy. And come on, I think with this title, in particular, we’re not looking for a complicated game; we’re looking to create our cult!

If you get the chance to play it soon, let me know what you think of it!
