You may or may not remember Space Channel 5 or Comix Zone. Both are cult classics from the 90s developed by SEGA. If you are not familiar with them you should know that Space Channel 5 was a music video game originally released for the Dreamcast were you take the role of Ulala a reporter who fights in an alien invasion with the power of music.
On the other hand Comix Zone was beat 'em up video game developed for the Genesis; you take the role of Sketch Turner a jaded comic book creator who ends up in the final issue of own comic book, fighting for his life in order to stop his own supervillain.
How this happened?
According to SEGA, the initiative comes from a partnership with media company PictureStart who have worked on movies like Warm Bodies, La La Land, The Hunger Games Saga and many others.
It has been reported that both projects are already in development. Space Channel 5 is being written by Barry Battles and Nir Paniry while Comix Zone will be written by Mae Catt, whose have been writing for shows like Young Justice, and the How to Train Your Dragon spinoff series, Dragons: The Nine Realms.
Royce Reeves-Darby and Erik Feig are overseeing both projects for Picturestart and will produce alongside Samie Kim Falvey, also of Picturestart. On SEGA’s side Vice President Co-COO Shuji Utsumi is overseeing both projects and Toru Nakahara, producer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise as well as executive producer for Sonic Prime TV series, will produce the two adaptations.
Last but not least SEGA’s game director Takumi Yoshinaga will join the team of Space Channel 5 and game producer Kagasei Shimomura will join the team of Comix Zone in order to make this adaptations as good as their source material.
