It sure is… “something” to look at

A few years back, Cecilia D'Anastasio at Kotaku took a deep dive into the super bizarre remake attempt for the anime classic from the 90s, Sailor Moon.

The show was planned to air for an American audience using the same story and characters with slight modifications that no one could actually see because it never went on TV. A low-quality trailer was shown at 1995’s Anime Expo, but that was it. No wonder why; it sure sounds like the perfect formula for disappointment. Kotaku’s research supported this thought:

Sailor Moon fandom is unquantifiably enormous. Its most extreme end has obsessed over the American, live-action Sailor Moon show for decades the same way diehard Twilight fans might hate-read the entirety of Fifty Shades of Grey. On scattered Sailor Moon fan sites, true connoisseurs have collected the detritus of the never-aired show. It’s blasphemous. And it’s hard to look away from.”

Years after the article was written, YouTuber Ray Mona, alongside Kotaku’s Cecilia D'Anastasio, has taken the research to a whole new level. As part of a documentary created by Mona, Finding Saban Moon: The Western World of Sailor Moon, they found the series’ pilot episode (from the Library Of Congress, lol) and included it in her project.

So, now that we all had the chance to watch the infamous remake, we can agree that this show should’ve never existed. Nor released. But it’s ok, now we have satisfied our curiosity with the first episode. And some of us may have been left wondering what the following story of this remake could’ve been like. But not that much to actually watch some more.
