Adapting a video game to a movie or series is not an easy task. There are always barriers that are difficult to overcome, such as the representation of iconic characters that millions of players love. Creatives behind The Last of Us series believe they've done a great job casting Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, respectively.
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have praised the work of both on several occasions. They recently shared a curious anecdote related to Pascal's appearance and Joel's representation. As weird as he sounds, the actor received harsh criticism for his beard because, apparently, some fans believe that his beard is not as cool as the protagonist of The Last of Us.
PASCAL'S BEARD DID NOT CONVINCE ALL THE FANS OF JOEL AND THE LAST OF US
According to The Hollywood Reporter, there were fans concerned about Pedro Pascal because, in other productions, they had not seen him with a full beard like Joel's, a character who sports a thick beard during the games.
Mazin knows that details like this are very important, especially for die-hard fans of the franchise who expect a faithful representation of his favorite characters. So he understands to some extent, the discontent of a certain part of the community.
“You're laughing, but for some people, that's a deal breaker! They're like, 'My God, he can't even have the same beard as Joel in the game,'" Mazin said.
Pascal and Ramsey said they were afraid of the high expectations of the players, so they have done everything possible to meet them and deliver a high-quality production. Likewise, both affirmed that they had been exposed to negative criticism.
Finally, the actor stressed that it had been hard working on the HBO series due to the demands and long hours of filming and production.
"Nothing was easy; it was super hard. Long hours, hard stuff, and we were both afraid to meet people's expectations. You know, 'Will they like me?' Ultimately, that influenced the characters because of how moody Joel is and how smart Ellie is," Pascal said.
