We are currently anticipating the final hearing between Microsoft and the FTC, which according to a timetable released by the Federal Trade Commission, will take place on August 2. The first preliminary hearing between Microsoft and the FTC was held in early January.
The second hearing round between the FTC and Microsoft will start on this date, so the final decision will likely be made well beyond August. Therefore, it seems unlikely that the Redmond behemoth would be able to complete Activision Blizzard's acquisition by June as originally intended.
Endless struggle
Recall that if the proposed merger between the two parties is not completed, Microsoft will be required to make a three billion dollar payment to Activision Blizzard as compensation. Microsoft is reportedly considering a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission in an effort to shorten the timeline.
As mentioned, a final acquisition in the first half of 2023 seems unavoidably problematic. The situation is still very complicated, and there does not appear to be a clear resolution. Agreements and lawsuits take time and money to complete, so the tangle will only begin to unravel in the coming months.
