During a recent interview with SFX Magazine, producer and writer Craig Mazin discussed the challenges of casting an actress to play a 14-year-old girl who is violent and funny at the same time. In fact, he confesses that the choice for that role was one of the most complicated.

"Ellie took longer because it's a very difficult role to cast. We tried to cast a 14-year-old girl, and acting is an incredibly difficult thing to do, right? (...) And the boys don't have as much experience in acting. life. It's hard to find kids who can embody that. Also, she needs to be funny, tough, violent, and protective," said the producer.

Craig Mazin reaffirmed that there were more than 100 candidates to play Ellie. He explains that he was surprised by Bella Ramsey's audition from the get-go, though he admits that he was afraid Neil Druckmann wouldn't be sold on it. So, he thought there was a chance of losing the "greatest Ellie of all time."

“The only fear was that I saw her audition before Neil did, so I was terrified that he wouldn't like it and I would have to live the rest of my life knowing that we couldn't have the best Ellie of all time. But he loved her. And we couldn't have done it better. She is simply the most remarkable performer," said Craig Mazin.
