The 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie is considered by many a poor adaptation of the Nintendo franchise. Rocky Morton, the film's director, believes it could have been very different if he had the backing of the Japanese company and its creatives.
With the release of the new animated film, Morton spoke about his original work and revealed that he would have loved to team up with Shigeru Miyamoto. He thinks this would have saved the film from the criticism and poor reception it received.
MORTON WANTED TO TEAM UP WITH NINTENDO FOR THE 1993 MOVIE
According to Variety (via MovieWeb), Morton had a brief meeting with Miyamoto before the production of the 1993 film began. However, there was no agreement to work together, so ultimately Nintendo was not directly involved in the film.
The rest is history, and the film is ultimately considered one of the worst video game adaptations. Morton said that having Nintendo's support would have made things much easier and therefore the result would have been very different.
Morton knows that certain details of the film feel out of place and believes this wouldn't have happened if Miyamoto had been the producer as he was for the animated film.
"If I had a relationship with Miyamoto and included him, if he had been the producer and understood what we were doing, he wouldn't have let certain things happen. We would have been a team, and it would have been a different movie," Morton said.
In the same interview, Miyamoto spoke precisely about the problems with video game adaptations and the failures that arise from separating filmmakers from the original creators of the franchises.
"We all feared the failures of previous adaptations of intellectual property, where there is a license and a distance between the original creators and the creators of the movies. Fans become indignant and angry because the studios didn't do justice to the original work. We really didn't want a violent reaction," said the Nintendo creative.
