With memorable characters and a unique world, Mortal Kombat is already one of the most popular fighting game franchises in the world. Over the past 30 years, we've seen numerous mainline entries and spin-offs that expanded the story and lore. It's clear that every fan has their favorite game, and a new hint suggests that one of the most underrated titles could be returning.
While most of the saga's entries are 2D or 3D fighting games, there are exceptions. One of the most interesting proposals that broke the mold was Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, an adventure and action title starring martial artists Liu Kang and Kung Lao. Despite not being a fighting video game, this title managed to conquer the hearts of thousands of fans since its original release for PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2005.
Now, a new post from Ed Boon, co-creator of the franchise, has excited fans who hope this game will come to next-gen consoles. In particular, the creative director of NetherRealm Studios conducted a poll on his Twitter account asking his followers if they would prefer to see a remaster or a sequel to Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks.

Over 90,000 people participated in the poll, and in the end, the winner was the first option with 55.4% of the total votes. As expected, the community began to speculate that Ed Boon suggested that the studio is working on a relaunch of the 2005 video game. While it is far from a crazy idea, it is important to note that he did not confirm the return of this video game at any time.
In its latest financial report, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed that Mortal Kombat 12 is in development and will debut later this year. Unfortunately, there are no further details about this project, but it is speculated that a formal announcement is relatively close.
