While the streaming service has become Netflix's main focus, the DVD rental service was still relatively successful. However, as part of a business reorganization, the company has decided to end this facet of their business.
Many people may not know that Netflix began in 1997 as a company that offered a subscription rental service, which consisted of mailing DVDs directly to customers. This business model revolutionized home entertainment. As Polygon recalls, the company introduced its monthly subscription model at the beginning of the millennium and quickly surpassed its traditional rental business. In 2007, exactly a decade after its founding, it launched its popular streaming service that is still in operation.
While the streaming service is currently Netflix's cornerstone, the company still offered its Blu-Ray and DVD rental service through its DVD.com website. Unfortunately, it will soon bid farewell to this aspect. As part of a business reorganization, the company has decided to end its DVD and Blu-Ray delivery service. They announced this decision in a statement, in which they also thanked the members and subscribers who have used the service over the last two decades.
"After 25 incredible years, we've decided to shut down DVD.com later this year. Our goal has always been to provide the best service to our members, but as the DVD business continues to shrink, that becomes increasingly difficult. So, we want to go out on top," explained Ted Sarandos, co-CEO.
Netflix announced that the last discs would be mailed on September 29th, and members will have until October 27th to return them. Subscriptions will be automatically canceled, although users can request their rental history to see how many and which titles they rented in recent years.
Finally, the company shared an infographic revealing that its home rental service had 40 million subscribers over the years. They also commented that the first DVD they ever sent was Beetlejuice, a horror-comedy film starring Michael Keaton. The Blind Side was the most popular title on DVD.com.
