It seems that the community manager of the Colombian Ministry of the Interior made a mistake

Recently, a government account in Colombia on Twitter generated a heated discussion after a post went viral that many people categorized as homophobic. Interestingly, this controversy is related, in a way, to the world of video games and movies. What happened?

The account of the Colombian Ministry of the Interior reacted to a post about The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The problem is that the official profile of the government institution responded with irony and said that "hopefully Luigi is gay", with a homophobic term. The post went viral and, of course, caused controversy due to the generally pejorative nature of the word used.

Colombian Ministry of the Interior in the eye of the storm for commenting on The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Colombian Ministry of the Interior deleted the tweet and acknowledged that the term used was not the correct. "We know that it was not the right words, but we are aware that homophobia kills. That's why we support all initiatives that make the LGBTIQ+ population visible and work to ensure their rights are guaranteed," reads the statement.

So, what happened? The community manager responsible for managing the Colombian agency's profiles on Twitter forgot to switch to his personal account when he expressed his opinion on The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

is the community manager homophobic? This question is up in the air due to the offensive term used in the post. Laura Gabriela Gil Savastano, former official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke out about it on her personal account and stated that, in fact, it is quite the opposite.

According to Laura Gil, the person responsible for the government account is an LGBT activist who reacted with irony to a post that insinuated that the animated feature film by Illumination and Nintendo was successful due to the absence of homosexual characters.

"The CM of the Ministry is an LGBT activist and reacted to a homophobic tweet that suggested that the success of the [movie] was due to the absence of LGBT figures. Perhaps out of anger, the CM mistakenly used his personal account to respond”.

Then, Laura Gil stated that the debate about the connotation of a term considered offensive to the LGBT movement belongs precisely to the members of this community. "In any case, we all make mistakes (...) The important thing is to correct and move forward," she concluded.
