"Fans aren't buying new games," analysts believe PlayStation needs to improve its software offerings

The company reported a drop in the sales of exclusive and third-party titles

Despite PlayStation 5 having an excellent quarter in sales, analysts are concerned about Sony's software business. The console has already sold 38 million units worldwide, which is a significant record. However, there was a decline in the overall sales of titles and in the sales of exclusive games.

Hiroki Totoki, the company's chief financial officer, spoke on the matter and expressed concern about the economic slowdown in key regions for the company. Because of this, analysts believe that the company must do something, as from their perspective, PlayStation players are not buying new games.

Despite PlayStation's good results, Sony Group is not entirely satisfied with its fiscal year ending on March 31. In general terms, the company reported a drop in consumer spending globally, both in its electronics and entertainment businesses.

This was reflected in the sale of fewer first-party games during the period. The recent report revealed a drop from 70.5 to 68 million games sold in general. At the same time, PlayStation went from selling 14.5 to 9.5 million exclusives when comparing year over year.

"Hardware sales are increasing in line with Sony's plan, but the momentum of software, the lucrative part of the gaming business, remains weak. This shows that PlayStation users are not buying new games," commented Hideki Yasuda, analyst at Toyo Securities.

Serkan Toto, analyst at Kantan Games, agrees with this perspective, as he believes that Sony needs to do something to change this trend. He thinks that the company can do it with its expansion into mobile and its various games as a service.

"On the software side, Sony has a lot of work to do. Everyone is waiting for PlayStation's mobile and live service games: where are they?" Toto said.
