The success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues, and it recently debuted in Japan. As expected, it was a resounding success, so its box office earnings will reach an important record soon: the $1 billion mark.

With this, Nintendo and Illumination's film will become one of the most profitable animated films and one of the most successful productions since the pandemic. The Super Mario Bros. Movie also makes history for video game-based cinema as it tops the list of the most successful adaptations.

Predictions about the movie's release in Japan were always very favorable. Now we know that the film will indeed reach and surpass the $1 billion mark generated at the box office this weekend.

This is expected to happen on Sunday, April 30th, after only 24 days of being available in theaters. Earlier this week, the film surpassed the $900 million mark. Its incredible $1 billion milestone will be achieved thanks to the recent release in Japan and Korea.

With this, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be Illumination's third successful film to surpass that figure. It will also be Universal's third most popular animated film, behind Minions and Despicable Me 3.

As if that weren't enough, it will become the fourth most successful film since 2019 in terms of ticket sales, surpassing productions such as Jurassic World Dominion and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be the first film of 2023 to reach $1 billion and the fifth production to achieve this record since the pandemic. Thus, it is a resounding success however you look at it.
