Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 dethrones The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The MCU film directed by James Gunn dominated the box office last weekend

Since its release in early April, The Super Mario Bros. Movie generated millions of dollars in profits and firmly dominated the international box office. It was only a matter of time before it dropped down a notch, and it was none other than the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film that put an end to its streak.

The Illumination, Universal Pictures and Nintendo animated film made a strong debut. Not only did it surpass the $1 billion mark worldwide, it is also one of the most successful film in the history of Mexico. With this in mind, it is not surprising that it dominated the box office for 5 consecutive weeks.

However, its reign came to an end thanks to the MCU. Last week, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the third installment in the franchise focused on space superheroes, premiered. As expected, it conquered the box office in the United States and worldwide.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, THE LATEST MCU FILM, DEBUTS WITH GOOD NUMBERS

In its first days in theaters, the film directed by James Gunn had an initial box office revenue that exceeded $282 million worldwide. According to early data, $114 million came from the United States and $161.1 million from the rest of the regions. While it fell short compared to the second installment, it surpassed the opening weekend of the original 2014 film.

However, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was unable to meet analysts' expectations, who predicted a domestic opening of $140 million. Likewise, it could not surpass the $137 million generated by The Super Mario Bros. Movie in its first 3 days in US theaters.

Even so, the latest MCU film is a box office success and put an end to the undisputed reign of the film inspired by Nintendo's video games.

But tell us, have you seen the latest Star-Lord and company adventure? What did you think? Do you think the Marvel Cinematic Universe will dominate the box office in the coming months? Let us know in the comments.
