Xbox Game Pass is a very attractive option for players who want to enjoy a lot of games economically. However, for a long time, there has been a debate about its impact on the industry and game sales. Is it a sustainable model? Does it harm the commercial performance of games? Questions like these are very common. Now, a developer's statements have added fuel to the fire.
In an interview with Segment Next, Frozenbyte Studio spoke at length about their upcoming project: Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy, the latest game in the 2.5D action franchise. At one point in the conversation, the topic of Microsoft's service came up.
Xbox Game Pass contributes to a big problem, developer suggests
The thing is, Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy will debut on day 1 on Xbox Game Pass. While it is a natural choice for a title of this nature, Frozenbyte Studio acknowledged that the paid service offers a very obvious advantage, but also presents a disadvantage.
"Game Pass is of course an interesting program to reach more gamers at scale. On the flip side of the coin, we believe it also contributes to the over-saturation of content in the gaming space and it can be hard to commit and enjoy games as there’s such an abundance of choice", commented a developer from the studio.
These statements come shortly after Jumpship, the company responsible for Somerville, said this week that Microsoft's service affects sales because players try the game but do not invest. Recently, Microsoft itself acknowledged that Xbox Game Pass can cannibalize sales under certain circumstances.
However, multiple independent developers praise the Xbox program, stating that it allows their projects to reach more people.
But tell us, do you agree with Frozenbyte Studio? Let us read your comments.
