It's official: Amazon Games will make a new Lord of the Rings MMO

The development will be led by the studio responsible for New World

The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful fantasy literary works of all time. Its popularity grew exponentially in the 21st century thanks to the film adaptations directed by Peter Jackson. It is also not a stranger to the world of video games, and it seems that soon players will be able to embark on a new adventure in Middle-earth.

SURPRISE! LORD OF THE RINGS WILL HAVE A NEW MMO

Through a statement, Amazon Games and Embracer Group announced that they are working on a new open-world MMORPG based on the stories of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. According to the information, the development is being carried out by Amazon Games Orange County, the studio responsible for the successful multiplayer title New World.

Details remain scarce, so the release date and official name of the project are unknown. However, the companies confirmed that it will be available worldwide for consoles and PC, while it will not be related to the Prime Video series The Rings of Power. They promised to reveal more information in the future.

"Providing players with a new version of The Lord of the Rings has been a long-standing aspiration for our team, and we are honored and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprises entrusts us with this iconic world. We are also pleased to expand our relationship with Embracer Group following our agreement with Tomb Raider last year, as they have proven to be excellent collaborators," said Christoph Hartmann, Vice President of Amazon Games.

"We have a clear ambition to create entertainment products of the highest quality for this IP, whether we use internal resources or partner with the best industry partners that complement our capabilities. We strive to offer an MMO that does justice to the extensive universe of Middle-earth and delights players around the world," explained Lee Guinchard, CEO of Freemode.

We must remember that The Lord of the Rings has had an MMORPG that has been active since 2007, although it never had much popularity compared to other examples of the genre. In addition, in 2021 it was reported that the long-awaited Leyou Technologies Holdings' Online RPG was canceled.

But tell us, are you excited about this project? Do you think it will meet expectations? Let us hear from you in the comments.
