Blizzard cancels original plans for Overwatch 2's PvE; will have missions but they'll be smaller

Overwatch 2 arrived as a controversial sequel as many believed it was unnecessary and that Blizzard could simply keep updating Overwatch. That said, the company had ambitious plans, such as making it free-to-play and integrating ambitious PvE elements. Unfortunately, their original plans for the latter were canceled.

According to information from GameSpot, Blizzard confirmed that the Hero Mode that was planned to be Overwatch 2's PvE offering, which we first saw at BlizzCon 2019, has been canceled. The reason being that the development team made the decision to take this game mode in another direction.

Aaron Keller, director of Overwatch 2, and Jared Neuss, executive producer, explained that they made this decision for the sake of the game and its multiplayer component. This is because they felt they wouldn't be able to execute it in the way they wanted to.

"The development of any game is a process. In the years since our announcement at BlizzCon 2019, we had a really large part of our team working on the PvE side of that game, and I think players of our service game could feel that because we finally stopped making content for it.

It has been about 2 and a half years since we released the last hero, and we don't want to get back to the point where another 3 and a half years have passed since the release of a PvP map. So we thoroughly analyzed what we were doing with the service game in service of this much larger thing we were working on and expected to launch later," Keller explained.

Overwatch 2 will have PvE offerings for its players

Now, it's important to specify that Blizzard canceled its original plans for PvE; however, the reality is that Overwatch 2 will receive content of this kind, only different. It will be in Season 6 when Overwatch 2 receives its first batch of PvE content. They will be story missions that players can play with their friends or strangers. The difference between them and the Hero Mode is that they'll be similar to what Blizzard had already released for Overwatch.

That is, Overwatch 2's story missions will be story content in which players will face off against AI-controlled enemies and follow a narrative. What they won't have are elements of the Hero Mode such as the progression system or unlockable abilities for each hero.
