The symbiote will make Peter Parker more powerful, but Insomniac sought a balance

In the latest PlayStation Showcase, a new trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 confirmed what many had already expected: part of the game's story will revolve around the symbiote Venom combining with Peter Parker. This will bring several interesting dynamics and a lot of power to the protagonist. That being said, there was a moment when Insomniac Games feared that Spider-Man would be too powerful with this suit.

If you are a fan of Spider-Man, you know that in several adaptations of the web-slinger (such as The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 with Tobey Maguire), Venom grants incredible powers to Peter Parker, but at the cost of invading his mind and turning him into a jerk. This is an idea that Insomniac Games adopted for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, in which we will see a more powerful Peter Parker, but also much more aggressive and raw.

Therefore, one of Insomniac Games' tasks was to ensure that players felt powerful while using Spider-Man with the symbiote suit. That is, to make it truly stronger and not just a cool aspect. This was a problem during development, as the company feared it would be too powerful, but they also had high expectations to meet.

"The expectations for the symbiote are really high, and we want it to feel different from what you normally see," said Bryan Intihar, creative director of Insomniac Games, in a conversation with IGN. "The symbiote is power, strength, aggression, and we wanted it to be represented from a gameplay standpoint."

Simply making Peter Parker incredibly powerful would be enough, right? Wrong. Insomniac Games feared that the suit would end up being too powerful, as this would make the game feel too easy for several sections. So instead, they chose to make his movements more aggressive and brutal, and also showed clear changes in Peter's personality, something that was already reflected in his conversations with Miles Morales in the latest trailer.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will arrive at some point in the fall of 2023 on PlayStation 5.
