Pre-orders for Final Fantasy XVI are reportedly causing "panic" at Square Enix

Reports say that the highly anticipated title is registering fewer pre-orders than its predecessor

Final Fantasy XVI is expected to be one of the biggest releases in June 2023 and is projected to sell millions in its first days on the market. However, Square Enix is concerned about its potential performance.

Final Fantasy is one of Square Enix's main franchises, and the last installment of the main series, Final Fantasy XV, was a sales success that sold over 10 million units. Thus, many would expect Final Fantasy XVI to surpass its predecessor in sales.

However, journalist Imran Khan reports that there is "panic" at Square Enix regarding this issue because the project is registering slightly fewer pre-orders, even when taking into account that Final Fantasy XVI will only debut on PlayStation 5, compared to Final Fantasy XV, which was released on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Khan points out that only the number of pre-orders is being considered, which could indicate how well the game might perform upon release. However, ultimately sales are what matter, and the game could still do well despite not having many pre-orders. Perhaps players no longer have much confidence in pre-orders and want to wait and see if the game has a good launch or not.

Additionally, the journalist talks about Square Enix's strange reminder that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is still in development with no apparent changes to its release plan, somehow reminding players that the game is on its way and giving it a broader promotional window. This is given that the sales of Final Fantasy VII Remake were good but deflated faster than expected.

Final Fantasy XVI is currently being developed exclusively for PlayStation 5, where it will debut on June 22, 2023.
