Is the Legend of Zelda movie real? Illumination CEO shares bad news

Rumors indicated that Nintendo would make a film of their franchise following the success of Super Mario Bros. The Movie.

Video game adaptations are at one of their highest points. In just the first half of 2023, the live-action series of The Last of Us and the animated film of Super Mario Bros were released. The success of the latter production exceeded expectations, making it seem like a natural step for Nintendo to seek to bring another of its main franchises to the big screen. Will The Legend of Zelda have its own movie?

A few days ago, journalist Jeff Sneider reported that Universal Pictures was supposedly close to closing a deal with Nintendo to make a movie inspired by The Legend of Zelda, with Illumination studio once again in charge of the project.

While fans questioned whether it was a good idea for this studio to be responsible for the adaptation of Link's adventures, many people doubted the veracity of the rumors.

Now, it was the co-founder and CEO of the animation studio who addressed the rumors circulating on the internet for days. Is Illumination working with Nintendo on another movie? Unfortunately, he shared disappointing news.

Director of Illumination denies rumors and confirms they are not working on a The Legend of Zelda movie

In a conversation with TheWrap, Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of the studio, assured that they are not working on a project of The Legend of Zelda. He reaffirms that he has a good relationship with Nintendo, so he understands that there is speculation about possible new collaborations.

"I don't know where that came from. I mean, I can understand how people suppose all sorts of things because obviously we had a great experience while we worked together. My relationship with Nintendo now includes being on their board, so I understand that people might assume these things," emphasized the head of Illumination.

According to TheWrap, Benjamin Renner, director of the movie Migration, entered the room and ensured that he sees a new rumor every week.

So, Illumination and Nintendo are not working on a feature film of the franchise at the moment. Will the project receive the green light in the future? It's impossible to know.

Super Mario Bros. The Movie is already one of the highest-grossing animated films in history, as it generated multi-million dollar profits during its theatrical run. While it is feasible that it will have a sequel, Chris Pratt, the actor who played the mustached plumber, assured that conversations about the project are on hold due to the United States writer's strike.

But tell us, are you disappointed by this news? Let us hear from you in the comments.
