"We have lost the console war", Microsoft accepts Xbox is far behind PlayStation and Nintendo

Company believes its gaming division will not outperform the competition

Microsoft accepted that Xbox lost the so-called console war to its competitors. This was expressed by the company in documents filed with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a regulator that strongly opposes the purchase of Activision Blizzard.

The technology giant accepts that Xbox is far behind PlayStation and Nintendo, and claims that its rivals are positioned to stay ahead. For that reason, it assures that Xbox is and probably will remain in the third position in the market.

MICROSOFT AND XBOX GIVES CONSOLE WAR FOR LOST

"Xbox has lost the console war, and its rivals are positioned to continue to dominate, including by leveraging exclusive content. Xbox has consistently ranked third behind PlayStation and Nintendo," reads the document shared by Tom Warren, editor of The Verge.

Microsoft adds that Xbox had only 16% console market share in 2021, as well as 21% of the installed base of consoles. For that reason, it believes that it is difficult for Xbox to reach the figures of its competitors, which are suppressed in the document.

The context of these statements is very important, as Microsoft will be meeting with the FTC to discuss everything related to the purchase of Activision Blizzard. Thus, it seems that its goal is to present Xbox as a brand that lags far behind its main competitors in the console market.

The company's statements are in line with what Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, stated in a recent interview. The executive accepted that Xbox will not be able to catch up with PlayStation or Nintendo with great games alone.
