Since its inception in the 1990s, Final Fantasy has become one of the most important Japanese role-playing franchises in the gaming industry. Last week, the sixteenth main installment officially debuted with great success, although it was unable to surpass the release of its predecessor.
Final Fantasy XVI achieves a significant milestone in less than a week
Through a social media post, Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy XVI has shipped 3 million units worldwide in both digital and physical formats since its official release. Thus, it achieved this impressive feat in approximately 6 days.
While it is a good start, the new role-playing entry was unable to match Final Fantasy XV, which sold 5 million copies worldwide during its 2016 release. On the other hand, it is close to reaching the numbers achieved by Final Fantasy VII Remake, which shipped 3.5 million units in 10 days.
Is Clive's adventure a failure? Absolutely not. While the exact number of copies it needs to sell to be considered a resounding success in the eyes of Square Enix remains a mystery, it is undeniable that it had a strong debut. And yes, context is crucial to understanding the complete picture.
We must remember that FF XVI is a PlayStation 5 exclusive, although a PC release is expected eventually. Thus, FF XV managed to sell 5 million units upon its launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Similarly, Final Fantasy VII Remake debuted first on PS4, a platform with a significantly larger installed base than Sony's next-gen hardware.

It will be interesting to see if the latest installment of Square Enix's popular role-playing franchise can maintain its strong sales momentum. Despite criticism from some players, the overall reception has been positive from the community and professional critics.
It is worth noting that this JRPG is already one of the fastest-selling exclusives on PS5 to date.
But tell us, did you give this title a chance? What did you think? Did it meet your expectations? Let us know in the comments.
