The acquisition of Activision Blizzard King is revealing a lot of information about Microsoft and Sony, primarily, but interesting details about Nintendo have also emerged, such as it being the primary console for Minecraft.

As part of the 5th day of the legal battle between the FTC and Microsoft, Tim Stuart, the financial executive of Microsoft's gaming division, revealed that Minecraft is "one of the most profitable first-party games, if not the most profitable," when questioned about the profitability of the IP.

Xbox is the platform where Minecraft generates the least revenue

Interestingly, the executive revealed that while Minecraft is crucial to Xbox's finances, it is on this brand that it generates the least income.

According to Stuart, Minecraft on PlayStation generates twice as much revenue as the Xbox version. However, neither of the two, even combined, surpasses the revenue generated by Minecraft for the Nintendo Switch, as the latter generates more money: precisely four times more than the Xbox version and twice as much as the PlayStation version (figures from fiscal year 2021).

The executive used this information to illustrate that Minecraft is a multi-platform IP that generates a lot of money and therefore remained multi-platform even after Microsoft acquired its creator, Mojang.

"We operate in the gaming market. The gaming market has many platforms, many devices, many users. If the gaming market grows, it's good for us," Stuart commented (via TweakTown). "Some decisions we make, we believe are good for us, but also for the industry. So, a rising tide lifts all boats."

With this precedent, Microsoft would attempt to support its idea of continuing to bring Call of Duty to PlayStation after finalizing the acquisition of Activision Blizzard King.

"The strength of a game like Minecraft comes from cross-platform play. You would lose a significant revenue stream if you stop supporting that," the executive expressed.
