Arion Kurtaj was identified as the hacker who attacked Rockstar Games' systems and leaked Grand Theft Auto VI footage last year. The 18-year-old was arrested in September 2022 and pleaded not guilty to authorities. However, we now know that he pleaded guilty to some of the 12 crimes he is accused of.
According to recent reports, the hacker is accused of several blackmail attempts, fraud and at least 6 counts of computer misuse. Despite this, the young man was deemed unfit to stand trial after psychological studies were conducted.
Hacker and leaker of GTA VI is declared unfit for trial
Thanks to the progress in the investigations, we know that Kurtaj indeed was responsible for hacking Rockstar and other renowned companies, such as Uber and Nvidia. In the specific case of GTA VI, we know that he leaked material and, in addition, threatened Rockstar employees with leaking the title's source code.
It was also revealed that the attacker was evaluated by psychiatrists and it was concluded that he is not fit to stand trial. So a jury will look at the case only to determine whether or not Kurtaj committed the crimes, but not to find him guilty.
Typically, someone is deemed unfit to stand trial when it is determined that he or she does not have the mental or physical capacity to understand or adequately participate in the judicial process. In general, this decision is based on a medical or psychological evaluation that determines that the individual is not competent to stand trial.
In these cases, instead of subjecting the person to a regular criminal trial, other measures may be chosen, such as placement in a health facility or the imposition of security measures to protect society and the individual. Because of this, it is unclear what will happen to Kurtaj in the coming months.
We know that there is another teenager, 17 years old, involved in the attacks on several companies. He was also indicted for fraud, racketeering and computer misuse. However, it is unclear whether he will be tried and whether he was involved in the hacking of Rockstar.
