Without a doubt, 2023 is one of the most exciting and captivating years in recent gaming history. One of the most celebrated releases was The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, a Nintendo Switch title that sold millions of copies and captured the hearts of gamers. It seemed like no one could take away its crown, but a new RPG has arrived.
Upon its release in may, the Breath of the Wild sequel received universal praise from the gaming press and quickly became the highest-rated game of 2023 up to that point. It was clear that more games would debut in the following months, but few could imagine they could compete with Nintendo's masterpiece.

That being said, Baldur's Gate 3, the highly anticipated RPG from Larian Studios, arrived on PC in early august. In addition to selling millions of copies and breaking records on Steam, it received outstanding ratings. Yes, it has now surpassed the exclusive Switch title's score.
As of writing these lines, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has an average score of 96 from critics on Metacritic based on 145 reviews. Meanwhile, Baldur's Gate 3 holds a rating of 97, making it the highest-rated game of 2023.
It's worth noting that the Larian Studios RPG has only 14 reviews so far, so the score might increase or decrease in the coming days. Either way, the presence of this project at the top of Metacritic aligns with this year's trend: the highest-rated games of 2023 so far are single-player experiences.
