Insiders say there won't be a PlayStation 5 "Slim" in this generation

The hype for the new model of PS5 could crash with the reality of the hardware

The greatest power in the smallest size. That was the maxim of technological development in electronic devices in recent decades and of course this moved to the console sector. However, in recent years, this idea fell apart in recent years with the reality of hardware and a clear example of this is PlayStation that for 3 generations was able to significantly reduce the size of its consoles making the Slim seal for each system. PS4 did not allow to launch a very reduced hardware and now that rumors indicate that it could happen with the PS5 it seems that recent history will repeat itself.

EVERYTHING INDICATES THAT THE NEW PS5 WILL NOT BE SLIM

Rumors, speculation and leaks scream in unison that Sony will announce and launch a new PS5 model in the coming weeks and the first idea that emerges from it is that it will be a PS5 Slim. However, recent leaked images and videos show a redesign of the console but not a significant reduction in size to consider it a "Slim" model. This supposed reality coincides with what recognized insiders point out on the subject. The first of these is Twitter user Kepler who assured that there will not be a PS5 Slim in this generation and that should not surprise anyone because dramatic size reductions are "dead" and there is nothing Sony (or Microsoft) can do to reduce the size of their current consoles.

Also, the insider pointed out that the possible reduction in size and improvement in efficiency could go through a major change of SoC leaving behind the 6nm adopting the 5nm | 4nm but that move would cost Sony or Microsoft more than $100 million and wouldn't reduce semiconductor production costs so it wouldn't make sense.

THE NEW PS5 WILL HAVE A DESIGN CHANGE BUT IT WON'T BE DRAMATICALLY SMALL

Precisely, this last idea around the SoC is another issue that coincides with what was revealed by journalist Tom Henderson who has shared reliable information about the new PS5 model. According to the details it has via its sources, the new model of the console will have a redesign but will not be smaller to consider it a "Slim" model in the old way that Sony handled for 3 generations. In the framework of recent rumors, Tom Henderson reaffirmed that it is not a PS5 Slim.

Finally, as for the bowels of the PS5, in recent days Derek Strickland, journalist of TweakTown reported that the new PS5 would not stop using a SoC of the N6 6nm family of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), because betting on an N5 would involve a drastic, expensive change and an important modification at the process level whose most notable advantage would be not using liquid metal but, as noted in the paragraph where Kepler touches on the subject, it would be costly and pointless.
