Local multiplayer is not quite dead, but it is a fact that most players enjoy their games with others online. PlayStation wants this to be different, at least on special occasions where many players gather in one place.
We know this thanks to a patent that Sony recently filed that is precisely related to local multiplayer. Apparently, the company wants to further exploit this game mode and take it to new heights with a project that sounds interesting.

Local multiplayer modes usually allow a very limited number of players to enjoy the same experience while in the same place. PlayStation wants to take this game mode one level further and allow dozens of people to play in local mode on special occasions.
Its patent presents a blueprint for cooperative and competitive games to be enjoyed locally en masse. As an example, the paper cites a case where up to 100 people could jointly enjoy a game in a movie theater.
It also mentions the possibility of creating augmented reality experiences that dozens of people can enjoy in the same place. Thus, his proposal is to expand local multiplayer and make it possible even for more than 100 people at the same time. The idea is to apply it to live events where players are physically present.
The company argues that this modality is commonly offered for up to 4 participants, but that it could be exploited in other ways in contexts very different from a group of 4 friends meeting in a house to play.
It is important to remember that this project is currently a patent, so there is no guarantee that it will be implemented or become a reality in the near future.
