In the history of the video game industry, there are plenty of games that unfortunately never came to fruition, and the community mourns them for how promising they looked. Unfortunately, there are others that get canceled without even being announced, like a new game based on one of the most successful horror films in history.
We're talking about The Thing, the 1980s film directed by the master of horror, John Carpenter. This franchise had a video game adaptation in 2002 but was going to have another one that looked very interesting but ultimately didn't materialize.
New information has just come to light about a new The Thing game, courtesy of Cumron "Ron" Ashitanti, one of the lead artists on the original game.
Why was the new The Thing game canceled?
There was little information about this secret project, but new details reveal that its cancellation was even sadder. This is because the project was canceled not because it was bad or couldn't meet expectations but due to licensing issues.
"With The Thing being a really old film now, I think the ownership has passed between a few different companies," Ashitanti commented in an interview with SyFy. "Who owns the rights to the films and the games and all that stuff has become very confused over the years. So, I think it's been a bit challenging to secure the IP rights to make another game."

The artist also revealed that the title was being developed by Ruffian Games, the studio that worked on Crackdown 2 and several other Microsoft titles and is now part of Rockstar, under the name Rockstar Dundee.
The good news within this sad case is that there is at least online material that provides a glimpse of the game's visual concept, which developer Paul Large shared on his YouTube account. Below, you can watch the two videos, but please be advised that they contain strong material, especially in the one with the dog.
