Baldur's Gate 3 is undoubtedly one of the best games of 2023. In fact, it can already enter the discussion as one of the best of the decade and even in history. That's why it's strange to hear that Larian Studios, the team responsible for its development, feared that their RPG would be torn apart by critics.
Recently, Swen Vincke, founder and CEO of Larian Studios, granted an interview to the Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel. There, he confessed that the studio members didn't expect Baldur's Gate 3 to be universally well-received. In fact, they were afraid it would be critically panned.
"We were worried it was going to score 6/10, 7/10, there's going to be a bug, something's going to happen, it's going to break down, everyone's going to hate it. So that was literally our mentality going in, knowing that the content was good", he said.
As you can see, it's not that Larian Studios thought Baldur's Gate 3 lacked quality. This is normal, as the project spent a long time in Early Access, where they could see that players enjoyed the RPG. So, they simply feared that something unexpected would occur. Fortunately, everything turned out well, and Baldur's Gate 3 received the praise it deserved.
"But we were afraid of that, that was the thing that frightened us the most. Because it's a very big game, and so we know that stuff can go wrong. Although the game usually has a way of settling back on its feet. So we didn't expect it to go this well, we didn't expect that players were going to react so strongly to it."
How about you? Did you expect Baldur's Gate 3 to be received in this way? Do you think it's one of the best games in history? Share your thoughts in the comments.
