Five Nights at Freddy's aims to continue the successful trend of video game adaptations to the big screen following the success of Super Mario Bros. The Movie, Sonic: The Movie, and Gran Turismo. Undoubtedly, one of the secrets to its success will be how faithful it is to the source material. Fortunately, it has already been confirmed that it will be based on a specific installment, but which one?
When adapting a video game for the silver screen, there are many possibilities. You can create a new story based on its world, draw from the overall franchise, or try to adapt a specific installment. In the case of Five Nights at Freddy's, it's the latter, and it will adapt the first title in the franchise: Five Nights at Freddy's (2014).
"[Matthew] Lillard will portray William Afton, a violent serial killer who kidnaps and murders children while wearing a golden rabbit costume. The disappearance of the children leaves a cursed legacy in the pizzeria, but the story doesn't end there. A security guard, played by [Josh] Hutcherson, will begin working the night shift at the establishment and soon discover that not everything is as it seems at Freddy's.
The animatronics that sing and dance for visitors during the day exhibit strange behavior when night falls, laying the foundation for the central mystery of the story," states the synopsis of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie.
Now, the fact that Five Nights at Freddy's is adapting the first installment of the series doesn't mean it will be a literal adaptation. In fact, there are already leaked images suggesting that we will see animatronics that debuted in other installments. Thus, you can expect to see elements and nods to the entire franchise. However, it's most likely that certain story elements will be saved for potential sequels.
