It's common for companies to release new versions of their consoles midway through a generation. That's why it might not surprise you to learn that Microsoft is already preparing a new version of the Xbox Series X. What may astonish you, however, is that this console will feature an unusual design and a new controller.
Recently, new documents were released that Microsoft presented in court during their case against the FTC regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. One of these documents is a presentation that reveals some of their plans for the near future.
One of the slides reveals that Microsoft is already planning a new model of the Xbox Series X. Unlike revisions from the previous generation, this console won't offer more power than its predecessor. Instead, it will have more storage, a completely new design, and a more immersive controller that comes with a rechargeable battery.
What will the new Xbox Series X be like?
According to the document, the new Xbox Series X is codenamed Brooklin. It's a console that will have exactly the same power as the Xbox Series X currently on the market, delivering gaming at 4K and up to 120 frames per second. That said, it will also have some improvements and changes in other areas.
For instance, Microsoft's new console will have Wi-Fi 6E for improved connectivity and lower latency. Furthermore, it will support Bluetooth 5.2 for a more stable connection with wireless accessories and peripherals. Additionally, it will offer double the internal storage (2 TB) so users can store more games. This is crucial since it will be an entirely digital console.
That's not all, as the new Xbox Series X will also offer greater efficiency and sustainability. The console will consume 15% less electrical power, and its low-power mode will save 20% electricity. Moreover, it will come in a completely recyclable package.
Another significant change will be the design, which apparently will be cylindrical in shape. It will also feature a USB-C port on the front for charging controllers. It's worth mentioning that this may not be the final design and could change in the commercial version.
Now, how much will this console cost? It will be available for $499 USD, which is the same price as the Xbox Series X at its launch.

Xbox is also preparing a new controller for Series X|S
The revision of the Xbox Series X isn't the only thing revealed in the documents. Microsoft is also preparing a new version of the Xbox controller. It's a controller that aims to deliver a technological leap and offer features already present in the Nintendo Switch controller and the DualSense for PlayStation 5.
This controller will provide a more immersive experience by offering haptic feedback and an accelerometer. It will also have quieter buttons and the ability to connect directly to Xbox Cloud Gaming for a cloud gaming experience with significantly lower latency.
Perhaps what will catch the attention of many is that this new Xbox controller won't require batteries. This is thanks to its removable and replaceable rechargeable battery. So, you can forget about buying AA batteries to keep playing.
It's worth mentioning that, as of now, Microsoft has not made any official comments about this new Xbox Series X or its controller. Considering that plans can change, we recommend taking this information with a grain of salt. We will keep an eye out and inform you when the company makes any announcements about this console.
