The consolidation phase in the gaming industry continues, and acquisitions will continue to surprise in the short and medium term. It's no secret that the gaming industry, with all its internal issues like any other, is a highly lucrative business at the moment, attracting the attention of companies that could become powerhouses and new competitors, just like Disney, which could take a giant step.

Disney Executives Urge Bob Iger to Buy Electronic Arts

According to a report from Bloomberg (via The Gamer), Disney's recent declines and very poor results in its film and TV offerings have led to a shift in ideas about what the company can do to diversify and succeed in other sectors. In this regard, internal sources are cited as saying that top Disney executives asked Bob Iger, the CEO, to consider significant acquisitions in the video game business.

Disney Wants to Acquire Gaming Companies to Become a Powerhouse in the Industry

The goal, as reported, is for Disney to transition from being a company that only deals with licenses to being a powerhouse in the gaming industry, and at the moment, attention is turning towards Electronic Arts. The company, the owner of blockbuster franchises like EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, The Sims, Battlefield, and with a highly successful product in recent years, Star Wars Jedi, is considered an example and a target for the investments Disney could make to position itself immediately in the gaming business.

Regarding this, executives insist that Disney immediately moves into the gaming industry through acquisitions during the consolidation phase. However, they haven't received the expected response from Bob Iger: "Iger’s aides are pressing him to consider a bolder transformation of Disney from a video-game licenser to a giant through, say, the acquisition of Electronic Arts. But, like with everything else, he hasn't committed."

The names Disney and EA as part of an acquisition narrative have been circulating for over 10 years, but so far, they have been rumors or recommendations from analysts. However, in recent years, there have been reports of EA's interest in negotiating within the consolidation phase, with its executives having meetings with companies as large as Apple, Amazon, and even Disney itself. The gaming industry has changed a lot in the last decade, and if there is a moment when other companies can be part of the gaming business, it's now through acquisitions.
