Five Nights at Freddy's took the world by surprise in 2014 with its first video game. Undoubtedly, a significant part of its media and commercial success was attributed to the impeccable and memorable designs of its terrifying animatronics. Of course, the live-action movie had big shoes to fill in that regard.
A considerable amount of the conversation surrounding the adaptation of the video game created by Scott Cawthon focused on the designs of the robotic-looking animals. Before the first trailer, many fans were concerned that these characters might not look good on screen.
Fortunately, the official trailer and promotional posters alleviated most doubts and concerns. Nevertheless, there were some who weren't entirely satisfied with certain elements. After these criticisms, the movie's designer came to their defense.

Robert Bennett, designer of Five Nights at Freddy's, responds to fan complaints
In an interview with SFX Magazine, Robert Bennett, who worked as a designer on this film production, discussed the challenges behind creating the famous animatronics.
While he acknowledges that the reception from the community has been mostly positive, the creative designer mentioned that he saw a few complaints. For example, he stated that the eye color of the characters generated criticism from die-hard game fans.
"Everything I've seen has been super positive. I know there was a big uproar about the red eyes in the poster, but again, that's one of those lore fan things that I didn't even know about," the designer acknowledged during the interview.
Robert Bennett then recounted a curious case of a fan who was disappointed that the villains in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie were created with computer-generated effects.

"I saw a couple of reaction videos on YouTube for the trailer. There was this one guy who said, 'It looks great, but I wish they showed the real animatronics; everything is CGI,'" the creative designer recalled.
Of course, we already know that the robotic animals in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie are, in fact, people in costumes or animatronics. So, the designer believes that the fan's criticism suggests that the characters look so good that they appear to be CGI.
"Everything in that trailer is our suits, and nothing was digitally touched. So it's fun that fans appreciate how accurate they are," Robert Bennett affirmed.
In the same interview, the movie's designer mentioned that the production team received digital files directly from Scott Cawthon, the franchise's creator. Therefore, they decided to base the characters in the film on that material rather than creating something entirely different or original.
"My intention was to make them as accurate as possible to the game. It would be challenging to create them anyway, and there was no reason to deviate from these designs because they are very good to begin with," Robert Bennett stated.

But tell us, do you like the movie's designs? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
