Analysts believe Sony has alternatives to react to Microsoft move

Microsoft recently finalized the purchase of Activision Blizzard and strengthened Xbox with very important franchises. Because of this, gamers expect Sony and PlayStation to respond in some way and also make a major acquisition.

Several analysts have a similar outlook, predicting that the Japanese companies will have to make a major investment as a sort of response to Microsoft and Xbox's high-profile acquisition.

Analysts predict significant investment by PlayStation

Analyst opinion is divided on Sony and PlayStation's plans to respond to the Activision Blizzard purchase. On the one hand, specialist Serkan Toto believes that the Japanese companies are likely to invest more in deals and acquisitions, as they are under a lot of pressure after Microsoft's purchase. From his perspective, there will be a major purchase by PlayStation.

“Sony surely is under pressure to react, even after their Bungie acquisition. I expect further investments and acquisitions for PlayStation, including a large one that would move the needle for them in a meaningful way,” said Toto.

On the other hand, analyst Karol Severin has a different opinion. He believes Sony does not have the capital to acquire another company the size of Activision Blizzard to counter Xbox's move.

Despite this, Severin thinks PlayStation can invest in other areas to respond somewhat to such an acquisition. He said Sony has the option of betting more on movies, TV, music and games with a subscription service that offers all this content in one place.

“Sony has one of the most impressive content catalogues on Earth. Bringing it together in a subscription offering for example could pose a solid competitive answer to Xbox’s cross-platform efforts It will be increasingly difficult to compete with Microsoft on games only. The only response for Sony on the games-only side would be buying something really big like Take-Two, but that is unlikely,” Severin said.

Previously, gamers have asked Sony to acquire major studios such as Take-Two, Electronic Arts, Square Enix, Capcom, Kojima Productions, CD Projekt RED, FromSoftware, among others in response. While the company has acquired companies such as Bungie, it has emphasized that it is looking for organic growth.
