Phil Spencer assured that Activision Blizzard's studios can work on Xbox IPs and vice versa.

With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, Microsoft now has a gaming business arsenal of over 50 teams. Of course, not all plans or projects involve new releases or even new IPs; there is also room to look to the past with re-releases, remasters, or remakes. Will the same happen with Activision Blizzard franchises?

Xbox Looks to the Future, but Also to the Past with the Acquisition of Activision Blizzard

During his participation in the Official Xbox Podcast on YouTube, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming brand, spoke about speculations and desires for the return of some franchises, considering that Activision Blizzard already has a recent history of such cases with Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Tony Hawk. Initially, Phil Spencer pointed out that the extensive number of studios and projects not only allows for consideration of new projects but also for revisiting the past.

In this regard, the Xbox chief stated, "The number of franchises that we now have in our portfolio is inspiring. I feel like we have to be great stewards for this content, and what we do with it is also people's memories across different platforms over decades. I want to make sure that when we go back into the past and look at something, it's done with a motivated team that really wants to work on it and not just for financial reasons."

Xbox Game Pass is a Great Opportunity for Re-releases and Remasters

Subsequently, Phil Spencer mentioned that thanks to Xbox Game Pass, they could establish a standard of releasing 2 games per year on the service in the form of re-releases or remasters. He used the example of the well-received Quake remasters, clarifying that there are no plans, and this is just an opportunity that may or may not be considered.

Finally, the Xbox chief declared that the possibilities between franchises and studios are open to everything that exists in the Microsoft gaming ecosystem. Studios can think about projects outside their circle because, in that case, what matters is that they have a good idea, commitment, and passion for taking on a franchise.

It's worth remembering that recently, Bobby Kotick held a meeting with Activision Blizzard employees, hinting at the return of some franchises that were stuck in the past. He also referred to the comeback of Guitar Hero and the possibilities the franchise would have with Xbox Game Pass.
