Super Mario Bros. Wonder with live-action? The idea was proposed, but Nintendo rejected it

Composer Koji Kondo took the concept of taking the game to the extreme seriously.

One of the premises of Super Mario Bros. Wonder is precisely to cause a feeling of astonishment in the player, something that Nintendo will achieve by using several gameplay resources never before used in the series. The game was undoubtedly going to surprise with an idea proposed by a project artist, but unfortunately, Nintendo rejected it.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder will retain the classic mechanics of the series, but the team behind the project set out to modify the experience in a way that would take both players and outsiders by surprise.

That's why the game was built on the premise of "taking everything to the extreme," and all members of the development team participated in a brainstorming session to offer their suggestions that they believed could work.

Mario live-action in a game? Koji Kondo wanted to make it a reality

In an interview with the project developers, it was revealed that the Wonder Flowers, the main power of this new game, were created precisely through suggestions from the entire team, offering very curious qualities to the characters.

According to the developers, these powers had to be unconventional and take the game "to the extreme," so they shared their ideas on colored pieces of paper that they stuck on a mural. In the end, there were over 2,000 ideas. Naturally, most of them remained as prototypes and were never realized, including a fabulous one from Koji Kondo.

The legendary Nintendo composer mentioned in the interview that he even participated in this idea contribution and revealed that his idea was to have a "live-action version of Mario super tall" appear after obtaining the Wonder Flower, humming the stage's melody and exclaiming "boing" when jumping.

Approximately, the Mario that Kondo wanted would measure around 1.68 meters if we consider human measurements. But in the Mushroom Kingdom, the laws and measurements of our reality do not apply.

Mario's body has a height of about 3 heads when in his normal mode and can shrink to 2 heads when hit by an enemy. That said, the Mario proposed by Kondo would be almost three times larger. All of this, not to mention that his appearance would be live-action, which could be quite unusual.

"I felt like I had to take the lead in going to the extreme," the composer commented with a laugh. Koji Kondo knows.

Considering how much a live-action Mario would stand out in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and especially how conservative Nintendo is, it was normal to imagine that the idea would not come to fruition.
