Looking back, we can see that there were some great game debuts in the last 12 months. However, in 2023, there were also disappointing titles that received very poor ratings. Recently, a player came across a physical copy of one of the worst game releases of the year, priced ridiculously high.

The competition for the worst game of the year is fierce. One of the titles that garnered much attention was The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, criticized for its terrible visuals and boring gameplay. It's a failure on all fronts.

Currently, the game by Nacon and Daedalic Entertainment is sold for $59.99 USD on Xbox and PlayStation, but it's available for $231.99 MXN on Steam thanks to a 60% discount. Naturally, many players consider this to be a very high price.

This week, a player took to Reddit to share their latest find—a used physical copy of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum for Xbox Series X|S priced at $88 AUD, which equates to about $60 USD. What's strange about this? Well, it's a used disc that someone returned.

Who would be willing to pay $60 USD for a used copy of one of the worst games of 2023? Certainly, very few people. As indicated by GameRant, it's most likely a mistake by the store, as the same title is sold for $58 AUD (around $40 USD) on the store's website.

Considering that the game inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's work was a failure, it's likely to be challenging to find physical units in the near future. Some players, however, consider it worth paying $60 USD for a collector's item.

The Failure of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Since its announcement, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been the target of much criticism. Players criticized its graphics and gameplay, stating that it looked very generic.

Shortly before its release in May, developers confirmed that the stealth and exploration title would feature voice acting in Elvish. However, controversy arose when it was revealed that players would have to pay for DLC to access that content.

The game inspired by The Lord of the Rings debuted with terrible ratings and immediately became one of the worst launches of 2023. The studio apologized and promised improvements, but soon after, announced that they would stop creating games and canceled another project in the franchise.
