With nearly 200 million copies sold, Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most successful video games in history. Despite its reach and popularity, it never received a single-player expansion. Why? Rockstar Games never provided an answer, but players believe it's the fault of GTA Online.

Shortly after release, the franchise's fifth installment received a robust multiplayer section. Despite a turbulent start, it was highly popular from the beginning and quickly grew with updates that added new content.

Therefore, it's easy to assume that Rockstar Games directed a significant portion of its efforts to create new material for GTA Online. This theory gained strength after the leak of GTA V's source code, which supposedly revealed that plans to create DLC content for the single-player campaign were canceled at some point in production.

Players lash out against GTA Online and users who bought microtransactions

Now, players have turned to social media to lament the absence of expansions and criticized the multiplayer aspect of Grand Theft Auto V. Some criticized fans who spent money on microtransactions, and there were even those who claimed they will boycott GTA 6.

"Each of you is to blame for buying microtransactions in GTA Online. What a total disaster," wrote a fan. "Everything was discarded to put those ideas into the stupid online because Shark Cards sell millions. I'm definitely not playing [GTA 6] because of this garbage," argued another.

"Rockstar really let GTA Online steal 8 single-player DLCs from us," wrote an angry fan on social media. "Vote with your wallets and don't spend money on GTA 6," wrote another user.

Undoubtedly, the multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V became a priority for the studio. Despite being over 10 years old, it still receives constant content. To put it in context, Rockstar Games stopped releasing new patches for the online mode of Red Dead Redemption 2, a title that debuted in 2018 and sold 57 million units.

In a recent interview, Scott Butchard, design director at Rockstar Games, confessed that they never imagined GTA Online would be so popular and successful. "When we started, I don't think we could have dreamed that we would still be going 10 years later. The success of GTA Online is something we never expected," he commented.
