Over 3 years since its original launch, The Last of Us: Part II is back with a remastered version and interesting extras. However, given the short time between both releases, criticisms have not been lacking, also because the PS4 version fully utilized the power of Sony's successful console. But for Naughty Dog, there is complete justification, and recently, the project director revealed the reason for this remaster.
Why did Naughty Dog decide to remaster The Last of Us: Part II?
During an interview with VGC, Matthew Gallant, director of The Last of Us: Part II Remastered and also the remake The Last of Us: Part I, talked about the origin of this project and what led his team to work on a title that cannot be considered old in any way. Initially, the creative pointed out the interest in allowing players who didn't enjoy the original title to experience it now on their PS5 with the best version available: "I think the reason we got into this project, both The Last of Us: Part I and The Last of Us: Part II Remastered, was because we love these games. We know players love them too, but we want someone choosing The Last of Us: Part II for the first time to have the best version. A native version for the PS5, a version that has all the haptic features, with different performance and fidelity modes."

The power of PS5 motivated the remastering of The Last of Us: Part II
Later, Matthew Gallant pointed out that another motivation to create The Last of Us: Part II Remastered was the potential for immediate improvement offered by PS5 as hardware, something that surprised them and made his team think about what could be done with the original game: "The leap between The Last of Us: Part II and The Last of Us: Part II Remastered is really closer to that of The Last of Us in 2013 and The Last of Us Remastered that we released on PS4. We launched TLOU at the end of the PS3 lifecycle, so it was a similar effort in terms of releasing The Last of Us: Part II at the end of the PS4 cycle. We got every ounce of power from the PS4. We reached all the limits, so we brought it to PS5 and could instantly increase the rendering settings and level of detail, the quality of the lighting, basically, we could enhance everything. I think the changes can be subtle, but it's undoubtedly the best and most beautiful version of the game that is possible to play."
The Last of Us: Part II Remastered will debut on January 19 on PS5.
