"Is a step in the wrong direction", Xbox president launches harsh criticism of Apple

Sarah Bond disagrees with a decision of the prominent company

Sarah Bond, president of Xbox, used her social networks to launch a harsh criticism to Apple. The reason? The company recently changed some of its policies in the face of the implementation of a new law, which in theory will force it to have a more open ecosystem.

Apple doesn't want to lose its profit margin because of this, so it made some adjustments that will affect other companies. Because of this, Bond believes the company is going in the wrong direction and needs to rethink some things.

Xbox is against Apple and its new policies

Due to the Digital Markets Act, Apple will have to allow developers and companies to offer apps and stores on their devices without the need to rely on the App Store. As you can imagine, this will impact the pockets of the company, which decided to act on the law that will come into force in March.

For such reason, Apple will force companies to pay a fee once their app or store exceeds the first million downloads per year. If this happens, the Cupertino company will receive $542,000 USD for each million downloads once the annual limit mentioned above is exceeded.

Various tech and service company executives have lambasted Apple's move, as it is ultimately forcing developers to go to the App Store with its new fee. Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify, stated that this strategy is "extortion, plain and simple."

Sarah Bond was not unsympathetic to the issue, as Xbox is keen to compete in the mobile market and bring services like Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming and its apps to more places, including Apple's ecosystem.

“We believe constructive conversations drive change and progress towards open platforms and greater competition. Apple’s new policy is a step in the wrong direction. We hope they listen to feedback on their proposed plan and work towards a more inclusive future for all,” said the Xbox executive.

For now, it is unclear what will happen and if Apple will give in to pressure from various companies demanding an adjustment and better competition in the sector.
