Anime fans concerned about platform changes

Sony announced that it will close Funimation in a few months and that its content will be unified with Crunchyroll, a service that the Japanese company bought in 2021. Users are worried, as they will lose the content they bought. In addition, it was confirmed that there will be a significant price increase of Crunchyroll.

Crunchyroll to go up in price in 2025

According to various sources, Sony sent an email to Funimation customers to notify them about the end of the platform and other changes it will make regarding its anime business. Users are not happy at all, as they were told of a drastic price increase.

According to details, Crunchyroll will go from costing $54.95 to $99.99 USD per year. This as part of the transition to be made between platforms and their content. Now, when and where will this happen? The increase will be applied from January 28, 2025.

For now, everything indicates that this increase will be made in the United States; however, it is not ruled out that a similar measure will be taken in other regions of the world. The news was not well received by Japanese animation enthusiasts, since the increase is approximately 80%.

Some people used social networks to criticize Sony and point out alleged monopolistic practices. The company is expected to reveal more details in the coming months and inform in a timely manner where the price adjustment will take place.
