It is well known that Nintendo is the king in Japan when it comes to video games. The preference of the Japanese public always favors Nintendo, placing it at the top of the sales charts. However, PlayStation has just put an end to its incredible streak.
Famitsu revealed the hardware and physical software sales figures for week 5 of 2024, which spanned from January 29 to February 4. What caught attention is that Nintendo's games were not the top sellers, but rather those of PlayStation 5.
PlayStation defeats Nintendo in Japan
You read it right, for the first time in a very long time, there were more PlayStation titles in the top 10 of the list of the best-selling physically formatted games of the week. The big winner of last week was Persona 3 Reload, which managed to sell just over 116,000 units if we consider the versions for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
In total, games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 sold 219,131 copies, much more than the 68,949 for Nintendo Switch (via Gematsu).

Will Nintendo Switch cease to be the king in Japan?
However, these are not terrible news for Nintendo Switch, as even though the system is on its way out, it continues to sell units week after week. This stumble was due to a lack of exclusive releases from both Nintendo and external studios.
In fact, the Nintendo console family was the top seller in Japan that week, and it was recently confirmed that Nintendo Switch is the most successful console in Japan in history, and globally it continues on its course to become the best-selling console of all time[/url].
