Halo has evolved significantly over time. While most major releases are part of the mainline series, we have also seen the debut of some spin-offs, such as Halo Wars, Halo 3 ODST, and Halo Spartan Assault. Well, it seems that one of the derivative games that never saw the light had many similarities with one of the big hits of the first half of 2024.

Against all odds, Helldivers 2 became a success thanks to its cooperative concept where players must battle endless waves of aliens. Despite technical issues, it gathered thousands of players on Steam and is one of the most played online experiences on PlayStation 5.

Many players agree that the philosophy behind the Arrowhead Game Studios project could seamlessly work in the Halo universe. It seems that some developers at 343 Industries reached the same conclusion a couple of years ago.

343i proposed many ideas for Halo spin-offs

In a social media post, user The Photoshop Guy mentioned that some former developers from 343 Industries proposed "an ODST game that was almost identical to Helldivers." Although he does not reveal how he obtained that information, the account @leaks_infinite, specializing in franchise leaks and rumors, claims to have heard something similar in 2022.

While this information is unconfirmed, Kevin Schmitt, former senior designer of Halo Infinite who worked at 343 Industries between 2012 and 2023, joined the conversation, fueled the rumors, and stated that the team proposed ideas for many spin-offs that unfortunately never materialized.

"We must have pitched between 20 and 30 game ideas during the 12 years I was there that would have worked well in the Halo universe. Many with ODST themes for single and multiplayer. Some spanned galaxies, others were more intimate... and one was really dark," commented Kevin Schmitt.

The developer did not share details, so it is unknown if one of the discarded games was a spin-off in the pure style of Helldivers. In a follow-up post, he revealed that there are many reasons why these projects never come to fruition.

"I've been in game development for almost 30 years. I probably pitched over 100 games. There are thousands of reasons why they don't get made. It's rarely about corporate greed or some other nefarious motive. I think it's a lot about finding the time," said the creative.

Ironically, Helldivers 2 is not available on Xbox. Players on Microsoft consoles regret this situation, as they even created a petition for the game to be available on more platforms. Similarly, Phil Spencer, Xbox executive, criticized the exclusivity.

But tell us, would you have liked to see a Halo 3 ODST spin-off in the pure style of Helldivers? Let us know in the comments.
