ELDEN RING: Did George R. R. Martin work on Shadow of the Erdtree?

Hidetaka Miyazaki from FromSoftware explained the writer's involvement.

ELDEN RING, FromSoftware's masterpiece, is one of the best games of the generation. This week, it reappeared and excited fans with the first trailer of its new expansion. The hype is through the roof, but fans wonder if author George R. R. Martin participated in the new content.

Like other titles from the studio, this RPG is set in a dark fantasy world; however, it stands out from its peers thanks to its intricate lore and memorable characters. Writer George R. R. Martin was a key piece in creating that fictional universe.

This week, FromSoftware surprised the community with the official trailer of Shadow of the Erdtree, the first downloadable content for ELDEN RING. We already know that the DLC will expand the narrative and introduce new locations and unreleased enemies. With that in mind, it's inevitable to wonder if the author of A Song of Ice and Fire participated again.

George R. R. Martin did not participate in Shadow of the Erdtree of ELDEN RING

In an interview with the Eurogamer portal, director Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed that the American novelist did not provide new material for the RPG's first expansion. Although he did not directly participate in the development of the downloadable content, the new story is based on his work.

"The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is based on a part of the original myth that he wrote for us. It's not an entirely new myth that he wrote specifically for Shadow of the Erdtree (...) It's just another part of the original story that we thought was appropriate to tell as a new expansion," commented the Japanese creative.

In another interview with IGN, Hidetaka Miyazaki confessed that he has exchanged some emails with George R. R. Martin since the release of ELDEN RING, but revealed that, unfortunately, they haven't had the opportunity to speak and meet in person.

In late 2022, the writer responsible for the books that inspired the Game of Thrones series revealed that he still hasn't played the dark fantasy RPG.

But tell us, did you like the expansion trailer? Do you think it will live up to the base game? Let us know in the comments.

Shadow of the Erdtree will be available on June 21.
