The Nintendo Switch celebrates 7 years with results counted in millions

The console brought the Japanese company back to the path of success

The 3rd of March 2017 was recorded in the history of video games as the launch day of the Nintendo Switch, a console that proved that with the Japanese company, nothing is set in stone and that it represents one of the greatest comebacks and turnarounds after the failure of the Wii U. Seven years after its debut, the hybrid system continues to thrive and aims to become the best-selling console in history.

Nintendo Switch celebrates 7 years with the greatest success

Preceded by the tough market period experienced with the Wii U, Nintendo once again bet on a different proposal that combined local and portable gaming. Its name: Nintendo Switch. This time, the Japanese company capitalized on its long history in the portable gaming sector, where the Game Boy and DS rest, to propose a hybrid concept that brought together two types of players. In a dock, you could play on your TV; remove it from there, and you could play it portably.

With NVIDIA hardware that could be exploited immensely despite being years in the market, an NVIDIA Tegra X1 SoC, removable controls with motion sensors, and new agreements with third-party developers, the Switch was an immediate success. It brought the traditional gaming experience to those who enjoyed portable gaming without forcing them to have a home console that could only be enjoyed connected to a TV.

Switch's success in these 7 years has been impressive and a great business for Nintendo, as shared by TweakTown journalist Derek Strickland. The latest records indicate that Switch has generated revenue of $77.6 billion, has sold over 1.2 billion copies of its entire catalog, and has sold 139.36 million units so far, a figure boosted by three models: standard, OLED, and Lite.

Video games made Nintendo Switch triumph

An essential part of Switch's success was its game offerings, as Nintendo ensured constant releases of entries from its most relevant franchises. The results were evident with Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Mario Kart achieving rarely seen success. Even Metroid did well in this generation, despite being a launch with a version for Wii U.

Although it was a launch with a version for Wii U, it is believed that Nintendo's decision to release Switch on the same day as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild laid the foundation for future success. Then came Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which became a market monster.

Seven years after its debut, the Nintendo Switch is still thriving, and all indications are that it will continue for another year, as reports suggest that the new Nintendo console will not see the light until 2025.

The Nintendo Switch debuted on March 3, 2017, with these video games:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • 1-2-Switch
  • Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment
  • Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
  • Skylanders: Imaginators
  • Super Bomberman R
  • Just Dance 2017
  • Fast RMX
  • Human Resource Machine
  • I am Setsuna
  • Little Inferno
  • Snipperclips – Cut it out, together!
  • World of Goo
