Report reveals studio uncertainty over Xbox's future

Xbox made a change of strategy recently and confirmed the arrival of 4 of its exclusives on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. According to a recent report, this kind of release will not stop there, as most of the Xbox games will supposedly be coming to PlayStation.

On the other hand, several developers and distributors are said to be concerned and feel uncertain about Xbox's hardware future. For such reason, they are in the dilemma of whether or not to continue supporting their systems.

More Xbox games coming to PlayStation

After attending the Game Developers Conference (GDC) and listening to various developers, Chris Dring, head of the GamesIndustry.biz site, participated in the GI Microcastf podcast (via Eurogamer), where he talked about Xbox's current strategy.

According to the journalist, Xbox releases on other platforms are not over. He stated that most Xbox games will debut on other systems, as long as the strategy works as the company hopes.

Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, stated that they would only bring 4 games to competing platforms: Hi-Fi RUSH, Pentiment, Grounded and Sea of Thieves. However, more such releases are not ruled out if Xbox sees good results.

Developers and distributors doubt Xbox's strategy

On the other hand, Dring stated that "Xbox is in real trouble as a hardware manufacturer". The journalist revealed that several sources claimed at GDC that Xbox's performance in Europe left much to be desired, as it is stagnating. For this reason, developers and distributors are doubtful about the future of the brand and the support they will give it.

"The phrase one major company who released a big game last year said [was], 'I don't know why we bothered supporting it'. We mentioned on a previous podcast that we'd heard retailers in Europe are considering or had already been cutting back their Xbox stock on their shelves - hardware, games, that kind of thing - and now you've got third-party publishers going, 'we're putting in a lot of effort trying to create a Series S version and an X version of a game when, to be honest with you, for us the market is PC and PS5'," Dring shared.
